Certain vital information has come to my attention, and I feel that I simply must share it here - the truth must be known!

Jim Henson was chosen as the leader of a secret order that has existed for centuries, Le Prieuré de Marionnettes, its task being to safeguard the truth about women's roles in the world and their fundamental importance to religion, and how femininity is the true Holy Grail of legend.

My evidence - look at Labyrinth! He's dotted it with icons and images pointing the way - notice how in the Labyrinth there are only two female characters - Sarah and the Junk Lady, but the Junk Lady is impoverised, borne down upon by a crushing weight, which symbolises the male-oriented world keeping her in her place. This is because she's a puppet and accepts the role gladly, allowing herself to be dominated - wheras Sarah has no strings, she's a determined, strong-willed, free-thinking woman, which is why she can roam where she pleases - its all there, all the clues in the Labyrinth about how such a woman can have all of these puzzles and dangers thrown against her but triumph and reach the truth at the centre - symbolised of course by the pureness of a baby! Jareth symbolises manhood and, as he can transform to an owl, the ever-watchful and dangerous male-oriented religions that would spy out such women and persecute them - is he not Sarah's tormentor and nemesis? It's all there, dammit!

And lastly, the most startling revelation of them all - so clear, if you don't let your eye delude you that its uncanny! Look at the peach, look closely...look how its positioned interestingly and framed by Henson, the light...the peach is the symbol of the Grail...but the peach is...

...an Apricot!!!!! *Stands back in awed triumph*

*speechless* I have.... absolutely no idea what to do with that.

This reminds me (vaguely, very vaguely) of the article written by that girl that said that hoggle was jesus... or was it satan? I'm not sure, but I know some of you will know what I'm talking about...

Oh my god. Everything is so clear now. How did I never see this. But am I a puppet or a determined, strong-willed, free-thinking woman? Or more importantly, is my apricot a peach?

QUOTE (Leanne @ Jun 2 2006, 11:46 PM)
Or more importantly, is my apricot a peach?

lmao

You think that's bad - it could turn out to be a nectarine, and then we're in seriously uncharted theological and philosophical territories, I can tell you....

lol I read that article too, Lhiata, and thought it was quite amusing - I'm still convinced (well, 90% certain, anyway) that it was a gag.

But it all just goes to show that if you really want to look for something, you can find it if you look long enough at it, especially in the realms of art and literature.

...even if it does make the Bullshit Detector explode at a 1000 paces.

On the minus side, I think I may just have provided Dan Brown with the idea for a sequel... *imagines Tom Hanks avidly sat in front of a TV screen, hitting the rewind button to catch the hidden symbols in 'Dance Magic' while a bunch of killer ninja nuns is closing in, nunchucks (what else would they use?) at the ready*...well, if I was a Hollywood producer, I'd buy it!

Aren't there three female characters? Sarah, Step-mom and the bag lady? But then you'd also have to consider all the females in the ballroom scene... but I think your point is interesting. :) :Sarah/Jareth: I do think it's amusing to consider Dan Brown writing about the secreted icons that lead to the center of the Labyrinth.

I like the psychological interpretation better myself if you want to make it anymore than a story. Some things are just hard for me to believe, like Ariel is a representation of Mary Magdalene.

Hm.... well, the ballroom scene is fairly obvious, but the symbolism follows the set plot of Labyrinth.

The ballroom scene is a very adult, somewhat sensual place, Sarah's on the cusp of childhoop/adulthood, she wants to be in that world, but is frightened by it at the same time.

Also, the symbolism that she wants to stay, she seeks out jareth, but she remembers what's important.

Leaving the ballroom by her choice perhaps foreshadows that she'll do the right thing in any final confrontation to come, as well...

Wow. It has really been too long since I watched or talked about Labyrinth, lol!!

I made a huge dissertation on Jareth's amulet ages ago elsewhere, I'll have to see if I can dig it up.
